Starlink sells two consumer plans, and the naming is not quite self-explanatory. Residential is the home-internet product: a fixed address, unlimited data, and the best speeds Starlink offers. Roam is the mobile product: use it anywhere, pause it when you don't need it, and take it on the road. The right choice depends almost entirely on whether your Starlink stays in one place.
Starlink Residential at a glance
Residential is registered to a single service address and is meant to replace a cable or DSL line at home.
- Fixed address. The plan is tied to your home. You can't legally use it while driving.
- Unlimited data. No data cap, no throttling after a threshold on the Max tier.
- Three speed tiers. 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and Max (up to 400+ Mbps). The two lower tiers are capped at their advertised speed and are only available in select areas.
- Best network priority. The Max tier gets top priority when the network is busy.
- Home-focused features. Free professional installation on the higher tiers, and hardware designed for a permanent mount.
Pricing starts at $55/month in the US (100 Mbps) and tops out at $130/month for Max. In the UK, the same three tiers run £40, £60, and £80 per month.
Starlink Roam at a glance
Roam is for people and vehicles that move: RVs, boats, van life, and remote work from anywhere.
- Use at any location. No fixed address. The dish works wherever you are.
- In-motion use. Supported in select areas, so you can stay online while driving.
- Three data tiers. 100 GB, 300 GB, and Unlimited. The 100 GB and 300 GB plans drop to unlimited low-speed data after you use your allotment.
- International coverage. Roam Unlimited includes use in 160+ countries; the smaller tiers cover the US and Canada (UK: Europe plus the UK).
- Pause anytime. Billing is monthly, and you can pause service and only pay for months you actually use it. Standby Mode keeps emergency messaging available for a small fee.
US pricing starts at $55/month for 100 GB and reaches $175/month for Unlimited. UK pricing is £55 for 100 GB and £100 for Unlimited.
Which one is right for you?
Pick Residential if your dish will live at one address and you want the best speeds for streaming, gaming, and working from home — especially if cable or DSL isn't available where you live.
Pick Roam if you live in an RV or van, spend time on a boat, or need internet in different places throughout the year. The ability to pause monthly is the killer feature here: seasonal users only pay for the months they're actually on the road.
If you're not sure, the 30-day trial covers you either way. Order, test it for a month, and get a full refund if it isn't what you expected.
Both plans qualify for the same referral discount: your second month is credited after 30 days of active service. No promo code needed.
